Career Opportunities in the field of Education

Teachers and educationists hold a very strong position and status in society. There were times when the status and service condition of teachers in the country was very disappointing. The salaries of the teachers were very less as compared to the other professions of the same stature. But gradually with the recommendations of various commissions and committees on education, it has now achieved a very good status in terms of emoluments as well as service conditions. Nowadays we may see people from different professions moving towards teaching as it provides good salary packages and a good working environment. Education is one field that will never be affected by the recession in the world because parents are not going to stop sending their children to school for education. The number of schools and colleges has increased manifold in the last century. With this increase, there is a demand for more and more teachers in the country. Hence courses of education have become very popular and more and more students are opting for the profession of teaching.
This field provides opportunities for lifelong learning to the people as during teaching one never cease to learn. Teachers foster creativity, develop character, give students lenses with which to view the world, and provide students with the skills they need to reach their potential and lead productive lives. A career in teaching helps to become more knowledgeable in a specific field of interest. The teaching provides a secure professional career with regular annual vacations. Even many retired persons from professional services get into this career. Many individuals are attracted to teaching by a sense of service because they want to make a clear, tangible difference in the lives of others.
The products of the B. Ed. programme can join the noble profession of teaching in Government or Private Schools. They can also find placement as Counselors (with MA Psychology/ diploma in Guidance and Counseling), as Education consultants, subject and pedagogy experts in companies like Extramarks, etc. One may also open his/her own school. Bank also finances for setting up the new school. Another opportunity after B.Ed. is to become an academic content writer or academic counselor. There are plenty of Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) also which are working in the field of education. After doing B.Ed., the teachers may join these NGOs for various projects being run by them. These organizations provide both full-time as well as part-time job opportunities. Apart from teaching in schools, one can open his/her own coaching institutions to provide tuition to the students which enables a teacher not only to improve teaching skills and knowledge but also to earn a decent amount of money. Interested candidates may also pursue higher studies in this field. Master of Education (M.Ed.) is the postgraduate higher specialized course that students can pursue after the completion of B.Ed.
The products of the M.Ed. program can find placements as Teacher Educators in Institutes of Advanced Studies in Education (IASEs), District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs), Directorates of Education, Councils of Secondary/Higher Secondary Education, State Councils of Educational Research and Training (SCERTs), Colleges of Education and University Education Departments. They also become eligible for working in various Government funded projects related to education in different universities as Project Coordinator or Project Assistant. They may also take up the job at the NGOs like Humana People to People, Prayas, Nanhi kali, Vidya, etc working for the education sector. Very good salaries are being provided by these NGOs to the deserving candidates having a passion for social service. Candidates may also pursue Ph.D. in Government and Private Universities after completing this course which opens a plethora of opportunities for them in the field of Teacher Education.
