Ashwini Bhatnagar is Professor and Dean, Faculty of Mass Communication and Media Technology. He holds a distinguished record in print journalism having worked for the best newspapers in the country, including The Pioneer, The Times of India, Sunday Mail and The Tribune, Chandigarh, in editorial leadership positions. He has also been Channel Head, VOI TV and UNI TV.
He has travelled widely with Prime Ministers such as Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Chandra Shekhar, Narasimha Rao and Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Content writing, design and delivery are his editorial strengths. He was part of The Times of India launch team for its Lucknow edition and later led the re-launch of Sunday Mail. Hedigitized The Tribune, Chandigarh, launched its internet edition, designed content for The Tribune’s hyper local editions in seven cities — Chandigarh, Patiala, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Bhatinda, Shimla, Jammu and reworked syndication and books pages, besides writing edits and heading the weekend supplements of the paper.
Till he joined the SGT University in 2019, he was Editor-in-Chief, WriteConnectIndia.com. India’s first- ever leisure reading and publishing digital platform with over a million life-span users. He was also simultaneously editorial advisor, Nyooz.com, Nyoooz TV, Newzstreet.com and TV, the hyper local text and video digital platforms which are rated among the Top 10 platforms in the country.
Ashwini is also a columnist and political commentatorforNyoooz.com, English-Hindi text and video feeds. Jansatta (Hindi publication of Indian Express group),Navodaya Times ( PunjabKesri group) and a travel writer for Hindustan Times.
His teaching experience includes training interns and junior staff at The Tribune group of newspapers, being visiting lecturer at Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi, Faculty of Mass Communication, Himachal University, Shimla, etc.
He has been on foreign assignments several times for special reporting. The assignments included coverage of the pro-democracy movement in Nepal, 1989, for TOI, Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar’s State Visit to Nepal for TOI in 1990, Prime Minister AtalBehari Vajpayee’s State Visit to Japan, The Tribune, 2001, war-ravaged Afghanistanfor The Tribune in September 2002,Cricket World Cup, South Africa, March 2003, The Tribune, and visits to the USA in2005, 2007 2009, 2014, 2016 and 2019.
Ashwini is Communication Strategy Expert for UNICEF, WHO, NACCO and New Concept Information Systems. He has published 11 books so far, includingnovels like The High Bouncing Lover, literary fiction on post-liberalization generation, published by Ocean Books, English imprint of PrabhatPrakashan andWhere the Light Enters, literary fiction on corporate family feud, published by 3i, Singapore.
He also authored the biography of Infosys founder N Narayana Murthy, published as an e-book by Ocean Books, biography of late P.D. Gupta, founder, Liberty Shoes, published by 3i, Singapore and the biography of Nicholas James Vujicic, America’s most known evangelist and motivational speaker, e-published by PrabhatPrakshan.
Shadow’s Word, a collection of essays, ideas, images and memories, was published by Chandigarh SahityaAkademy andMagic of the Fanciful—Essays from Journalism, was published by Abhishek Publications with a blurb by Time essayist and novelist Pico Iyer. He also introduced, edited and anointed S. N Dar’s English translation of Waris Shah’s Heer-Ranjha.
Starring Mehjabeen as MeenaKumari, a biography of the legendary actress written by him, was released in November 2019 while The Lotus Years, Political Life in India in the Time of Rajiv Gandhi, was released in December 2019. It has been published by the Hachette Group. AdbhutPremkiVichitra Katha, a Hindi translation of The High Bouncing Lover, published by PrabhatPrakarshan, was released in August 2019.
His long-form documentary, Diary of a Kashmiri Pandit, based on the diary of a Kashmiri Pandit killed by terrorists in 1990, wasanchored by actress Deepti Naval and is available on Jio Prime. Documentaries Ram Ban GamankaSach,based on Valmiki’sRamayan, and The Living Islands, on Lakshadweep Islands’ ecology conservation have been telecast by national broadcasters. He hold a post graduate degree in Economics from University of Lucknow.
